Crazy Paving
Crazy paving is the ultimate alternative to regular garden paving. This time less, unique pattern will suit any house style like modern houses, country cottages, weatherboard houses or regular brick houses.
Crazy paving is a puzzle or mosaic of stone, typically slate or sandstone. Each individual random tile will have it's own unique shape and colour. The crazy paving slate is actually split by hand at the quarry! Some slate varieties will have fossils, circles and patterns within individual pieces.
All the random tiles are very similar in thickness and will provide an even and level surface, when installed correctly. Because most slates used for crazy paving are very thin (14 -30 mm), a strong base of crushed rock is leveled and compacted. The tiles are then placed in a puzzle pattern on a layer of concrete mortar.
A range of small, medium and large random tiles in an appropriate ratio, create a natural look.
Between the tiles, we color the grout to suit the selected crazy paving slate. A red or sandstone coloured grout will compliment brown and cream coloured coloured tiles like Indian Autumn or Titan brown Slate. A white grout will suit varieties like Castlemaine Black Velvet Slate etc.
Slate is recommended for pool surroundings because of it's salt and chemical resistance.
Sealing slate is recommended to prevent the slate from weathering in time. The ideal maintenance for slate is to seal it with a preferred finish (matt, gloss, wet gloss, etc) immediately after installation, then every 2-3 years.
Sealing the new crazy paving with a wet sealer (most popular) will bring out the different colours and appears with a permanent gloss on the slate. A matt sealer will give the paving protection from the whether and environment and will not change the original colours of the stone.
